OpenAI cancels the Pro 200 cut. Who actually gets more usage?

The increase depends on the allowance you already had. OpenAI’s updated documentation explains the difference between more agent work and more Chat messages.

OpenAI has withdrawn a planned usage reduction for Pro 200, its $200-a-month subscription. In an announcement on 29 October, Codex head Thibault Sottiaux also said the company was increasing limits across Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500 and Business Premium after user feedback. For existing Pro 200 subscribers, however, keeping an allowance and doubling it are two different outcomes.

Update, November 1: ChatGPT and Codex will share an allowance

OpenAI now documents a separate change starting in December: Plus, Pro and Business will share usage across ChatGPT and Codex as Work capabilities enter ChatGPT. Instant chat is excluded. Consumption depends on tokens, the model and the task; a message count alone will not describe the allowance. Settings → Usage will show the combined balance and reset time. The page does not give an exact December date or per-model coefficients.

This changes what to watch: substantial work in one product may leave less capacity for the other. It does not, by itself, tell us whether a particular subscriber will hit a limit sooner. The October allowance changes below remain historical context, not a complete description of the December system.

29 October 2026. The subsequent Help Center update distinguishes between the two previous Pro 200 allowances.

The change, plan by plan

The updated Pro documentation makes the distinction explicit. These changes apply automatically; active subscribers need neither to resubscribe nor to wait for renewal.

Why an allowance is not a message count

Work and Codex share a usage allowance. A task’s cost depends on its model, the material it processes, reasoning effort and the steps it performs. Two requests can therefore consume different amounts even when each begins with one message. An increase in capacity cannot promise a matching increase in finished tasks.

GPT-6 Pro messages in Chat have a separate limit: Pro 100 and Pro 500 keep their weekly message counts; the lower Pro 200 count rises to match the higher one. Check Settings → Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & billing in Codex, for your remaining allowance and reset time.

Dots, OpenAI’s always-on agents, remain a separate case. Sottiaux says their extended limits will continue for now, with Dot usage still counted separately from the default allowance. The announcement does not give an end date for that arrangement.

Business seats and paid overflow

For businesses, the seat assigned to a person matters. Standard and Premium provide different Work and Codex allowances, while individual Chat model limits remain separate. Additional workspace usage also depends on the credits available and the spending controls set by the company. A Premium announcement should not be read as an upgrade for every Business seat.

On eligible personal accounts, purchased credits cover supported activity after included usage runs out. They are an additional expense, not a larger subscription allowance. OpenAI lists Codex, Work and supported document apps among the features that can draw on them; these credits are separate from API billing.

The practical value of the reversal

The useful comparison is how much of your recurring work a subscription covers before you must wait or spend more. That requires watching completed work alongside consumption, rather than counting prompts. Pro 200 is also open to new subscriptions again at $200 a month, with the same Work and Codex allowance as other Pro 200 subscribers.
