Claude Ultra drops the five-hour limit. The weekly cap stays.

Anthropic’s $200 plan gives verified accounts more freedom to concentrate their work. Here is what changes, what verification means, and why the new name does not mean unlimited usage.

Claude’s most expensive individual subscription is losing a limit that could interrupt work long before the weekly allowance ran out. On 30 October, Anthropic announced that verified Ultra accounts would no longer face the five-hour usage cap. The weekly allowance remains unchanged.

Two new names, the same prices

Max 5x is now Max; Max 20x becomes Ultra. Existing subscribers move across automatically. The monthly web prices stay at $100 and $200 respectively, before applicable taxes; mobile-store pricing can differ.

Claude announces Ultra and the five-hour change

The official announcement, 30 October 2026. The removal began with most existing subscribers; newer accounts can retain a temporary limit.

A work session and a week are different budgets

A five-hour limit restricts consumption within a window that begins with your first message. It does not grant five hours of continuous work: intensive use can exhaust it earlier. A weekly limit applies across all models; the current Help Center also lists a separate weekly limit for Fable. Claude chat, Claude Code and the desktop app draw on the same allowance.

Removing the shorter limit lets verified Ultra users concentrate more of that allowance into a demanding session. It does not add a fixed number of tasks: consumption still depends on the model, effort level and material being processed. Work can still exhaust the weekly budget.

The former name, Max 20x, can make today’s “10x Pro usage every week” look like a reduction. Those numbers alone do not establish one: the old plan name is not a weekly before-and-after measurement. Anthropic explicitly says weekly limits have not changed. The meaningful change is how freely that capacity can be used during the week.

How to tell whether the limit is gone

Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using factors such as account and payment history. Newer accounts may keep a temporary cap until that process is complete. No application is required, and confirming a phone number at checkout is a separate step. The company says it will email subscribers when the temporary limit is removed.

The visible check is in Settings → Usage. According to the Ultra documentation, a verified account no longer shows the Current session bar. The weekly counter still matters. Anthropic also reserves capacity controls, so the change is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.

For someone repeatedly stopped by the session cap while weekly capacity remained, this is a useful change at the same price. For someone already exhausting the weekly allowance, it leaves the main constraint intact. The benefit depends on which limit was interrupting the work.
