GPT Image 2.6 surfaces in OpenAI’s own API documentation

An image-editing parameter names the model. A public launch remains unconfirmed.

OpenAI’s image-editing reference now names GPT Image 2.6 under markup, a parameter for supplying a transparent PNG overlay. The wording also appears in commit aa880040 in the company’s openai-openapi repository, dated 28 October at 20:56 UTC. This is a traceable change in OpenAI’s own materials.

The overlay guides an edit on the first input image. It must match that image’s dimensions after orientation and cannot be combined with a mask. For someone directing an image edit, the interesting detail is the ability to provide a visual instruction layer alongside the source image.

Neither cited source supplies a release date, price or benchmark for 2.6. The reference’s listed model identifiers still include the 2.5 variants without a 2.6 identifier. The name is public; availability and performance remain open questions.
