Is Bel becoming GPT-6.2? Inside the Betelgeuse rumor

An alleged tracker entry has given the Bel story a new name. The link to GPT-6.2 is still a claim, not an OpenAI announcement.

The new detail is a specific identifier: gpt-6.2-betelgeuse. On 29 October, Nathan Daniels (@Josh67Joshua) linked Bel to GPT-6.2 Betelgeuse and the Dougtrio pre-training series. Minutes later, @taker_of_whizz quoted that post alongside an alleged internal-tracker screenshot.

Chris (@ChrisGPT), who says he had previously reported on Bel, subsequently raised the possibility of a codename change. He also explicitly said he had not confirmed the connection. His post points back to the same screenshot; it does not supply a second technical artifact.

If the identifier is genuine, it could clarify where Bel fits in OpenAI’s model lineup. It would still tell us little about performance or availability. For now, the interesting lead is the name itself. A dated public API entry, repository change or statement from OpenAI would give this story firmer ground.
